From Met Cop to Tramping Trucker: My Adventure on the Road.

For a decade, I'd worn the badge of a metropolitan police officer, enforcing the law and maintaining order. However, the monotony of the job had me feeling like I was trapped in a cage, yearning for the adventure that had defined my earlier years. My career and student days had been all about exploring and traveling, from my time in the army to my stint as an engineer at Thompson Reuters. Even during my university years, I'd always found a way to travel. After a decade in law enforcement, it was time to hang up my boots and embark on a new journey—one that allowed me to do what I loved most: travel.

A Twist in the Road

With 24 years of experience behind the wheel of Artic trucks (HGV Class 1), I decided to take on a full-time, international role and explore Europe in a way I'd never done before. The idea had been brewing in my mind for some time, and when I finally made the decision, I picked up the phone and called Alcaline, a reputable transport company. I had the privilege of meeting Loz, the owner, who proudly showed me his fleet of helicopters and other impressive toys. It didn't take long for me to be sold on the idea of joining Alcaline.

A Tramping Trucker's Journey

Before I knew it, I had traded in my police uniform for the life of a "tramping trucker." This was a new experience for me, and it came with its fair share of challenges and thrills. Driving through France, down to Italy, through the awe-inspiring tunnels of the Alps, was nothing short of breathtaking. The scenery was unlike anything I'd ever seen, and I discovered hidden gems and unique places that you wouldn't typically find in tourist brochures.

While on the road with Alcaline, I spent almost a year as a full-time tramping trucker. During this time, I absorbed everything there was to learn about customs paperwork, securing my lorry, finding suitable parking spots, and the art of avoiding potential run-ins with criminals. It was a steep learning curve, but it added depth to my journey and provided valuable insights into the world of international trucking.

The Toll of Full-Time Tramping

However, full-time tramping began to take its toll. The constant travel, coupled with the physical and mental demands of the job, started affecting my health. Fatigue kicked in, and I found myself dealing with a few personal challenges. It became apparent that it was time to transition to a part-time role and create a healthier work-life balance.

Conclusion

My time with Alcaline was a remarkable chapter in my life's adventure. From law enforcement to life on the open road, I had traversed diverse landscapes, met unique individuals, and acquired a wealth of knowledge about the logistics and challenges of long-haul trucking in Europe. While full-time tramping had its demands, I wouldn't trade the experiences and lessons learned during this journey for anything. As I continue to balance work and life, I carry with me the memories of breathtaking scenery and the thrill of discovering the hidden gems of Europe—proof that adventure can be found even when you're behind the wheel of a truck.
